Asheville Trip: Day 1 of work

Here are some updates from today's work.  These updates are typed up by youth on the job sites (I correct some spelling...and details if need be, but do my best to keep it in their words.)

Group 2:

Today we went to Black Mountain to work with Harvest of Hope.  We packed bags of mushrooms and okra, split up to pack orders of food onto pallets and moved dry wall, reconvened for lunch, went to pick up doors and miscellaneous wood from a box car, drove back to the place and unloaded the doors and wood into the warehouse.

Group 3:

when we arrived at the site, we spoke with the homeowner and learned what we needed to do. One group began shoveling dirt from a big pile into a big sinkhole, another group got onto the roof of the house to clean the gutters, and another group began cutting down branches that were hanging above the house and shed. After lunch we fixed the back porch and cut weeds in the backyard.

Group 4:

Today group 4 went to Mrs. Karen’s house! We demolished tile in the kitchen and a bathroom downstairs to be able to replace it tomorrow with new tile. We also took out a toilet to be able to clean and lay down the tile correctly. We were able to fix a leak in the sink that was causing the flooring problems. Outside we trimmed weeds and made sure to clean up the yard. We were also able to hangout and talk to Mrs. Karen!! We got to see and pet all of her dogs, cats, chickens, and a horse!

Group 5:

Today, James, Toni, Mk, Kinley, Zane, Connor, Charles, Brynn, Callie and Addie went to Mary’s house. We met with Mary and got right to work. Zane and Connor found a problem with the railing project and moved on to work on making trim with Charles instead. Brynn, Kinley and Callie painted the shed, overseen by Toni. They then moved to mulch with Addie. We all took a break for lunch and enjoyed various sammys. The boys kept working on trims to waterproof it along with some plywood. The girls worked on caulking the sides and painting the house. James and Toni were doing what bosses do. We talked with Mary, packed up and eventually left for ymca for some much needed showers(Charles especially).

All in all it was a great day and we all look forward to going back tomorrow.

Group 6:

The first thing we did was, we got our groups and got the van, from there we traveled to the church we were working at for the day. then after meeting Bob and Kevin from Bell UMC.  At Grace UMC and Big Sandy UMC, we installed posts for the blessing boxes we are building. we went to two other churches and put up posts. Then we came back and ate lunch, came up with a plan for the blessing boxes and then started working on them. We cut wood, and assembled blessings boxes together.

Group 7:

First we went to Deep Time coffee shop, but this is know ordinary coffee shop because this one helps people who were incarcerated in the past get a fresh start and have a sustainable source of income. Then after about ten to twenty minutes we left, but not before talking with the best barista ever Amber (who just so happens to be the one at Deep Time) and I feel like everyone enjoyed the experience and insight into what life is like up here in Asheville. After that we went to Food Connections a place that repurposes untouched food that is cooked but not used at restaurants, the Biltmore estate, local hotels, and the local Hospital. After packing meals we ate some of our lunch and then cleaned some vehicles for them before they left to go deliver meals. and then after that, we headed back to the church to grab star supplies and then our day was pretty much over after we went to the local YMCA and took showers

Update for Group 1:

Group one worked on removing the front porch steps, supports and concrete post bases. They sprayed the siding of all sides of the house with a solution to remove grime and mildew. Then scrubbed and rinsed and repeated until it was all clean. A part of the group climbed trees and ladders to cut branches that were close to the roof. After removing or bending nails from the old wood steps, a few members worked hard to saw wood to form the new steps and supports.

Cheri has had an incredibly rough collection of years, with the hurricane damage we are repairing being the least of it all. A few years ago Cheri’s daughter, caught up in drug usage prior, had passed due to a fentanyl overdose. After associating the death to her ex-husband’s brother, he would be outcast from the family. Years down the line Cheri’s family would run into the man again, and Cheri’s son would attack him and is now being incarcerated for the incident. On top of everything Cheri has been going through large amounts of pain and injury, of which she hasn’t been able to pay much for due to her lack of insurance.
