Hump day was a great day. Our groups have been very productive this week and gotten lots of work done. They have been so good about listening to homeowner's stories. They have responded with such love and grace.
Below are some updates from the youth's perspective!
Group 3
Today we worked at Covenant Church to help assemble garden boxes that can be used by the RV community of displaced people staying on the property. We started by disassembling recycled pallets, using saws to cut through the nails. Then we sorted through the wood to find the most uniform and durable pieces, and began to assemble 2 boxes according to the churches requests. By the end of the day, we were almost done with the first, and about halfway through the second.
Group 4
Today we first started at deep time and ordered some coffee then we went to another church to talk to some women about their houselessness and how they ended up in the situations they were and are in, also about the stereotypes for houseless people, after that we went on a poverty walk and kind of debunked those stereotypes which was definitely eye opening, after that we went back to deep time and talked with people there about the mission they have, then got a tour and learned how to roast coffee beans
Group 5
Today we went to bounty and soul, this is a food shelter for the community for fresh vegetables. They had us slated for two hours to sort potatoes into smaller 3 lbs bags. At the end of our two hours, Randy was unable to find us another place after so we talked with Allie, and we where able to stay to finish sorting the last 12 50 pound bags of potatoes. We did make a bet on times it would take, Cooper took the win with the closes to the completion time. After we finished the staff talked to us about the market they do for the community. This biggest day for food distribution is thursday. On thursday's they have a large community they feed and they always place a flower and a love note in each box. They also talked about the cooking classes they offer. Lastly there mission is simple to "Share" there bounty. They want to give the people the dignity of what they choose not just what they are given. When we got back to the church, Landyn mentioned a food truck came to the church they worked at and it was the one we help packed for.
Group 6
Today we went to the worksite and we helped to install the dry wall around the house. Several people learned to tape a corner, cover screw holes, and tape joints. We also helped to pulled nails out of the scrap wood from the deck the first group demoed.
Group 7
Today we went to Amanda’s house and painted here basement where we had lots of fun talking with her and we started to finger paint the walls because the brushes could not cover the texture of the walls. We also moved furniture out of her house and into a dumpster.
Group 8
Today I went to a woman’s house and we worked on her yard. Luckily it was shady and I was very thankful for that. We cleaned up the grass, cut up some branches, and threw away and picked up sticks. 2 people mowed the lawn, 2 people picked up sticks and raked, and others walked around finding other stuff. The woman was very nice and she was super appreciative. The 2nd house we went to was a very easy house to do. All we had to do was cut down some branches on this tree that was blocking most of the yard and use the weed whacker to cut some really tall grasses. She left the back door open so we could use the restroom and she also left some snacks and popsicles for us. We loved working for her and even though we didn’t meet her, she would’ve seem like a very nice person to meet. After we finished with the house, we went in the van and saw the next house that we were gonna work on and it seemed very easy and fun to do.
